All About the Philippines :: essays research papers
The first inhabitants of the Philippines arrived from the land bridge from Asia over 150,000 years ago. Throughout the years, migrants from Indonesia, Malaysia, and other parts of Asia made their way to the islands of this country. In the fourteenth century, the Arabs arrived and soon began a long tradition of Islam. Many Muslims are still living in the Philippines today. à à à à à In 1521, Magellan claimed the land for Spain, but was killed by local chiefs who did not want Spainââ¬â¢s inhabitance. However, the Spanish returned in 1543 and named the land Filipinas after King Philip II. Spain soon after began their control. At the time of the Spanish American War the colonial government in the Philippines was administered by a Governor-General selected in Spain. The Philippine islands were used to reward the kingââ¬â¢s favorites who could return home enormous fortunes from natives and foreign immigrants via a system of taxation that savored of blackmail and confiscation. The Governor-General had a cabinet composed of the Archbishop of Manila, the Captain-General of the army and the Admiral of the navy stationed in the colonies. The administrative power lay with the Governor-General and the Archbishop, and the religious orders of the Spanish Catholic Church were the practical controllers. à à à à à The climate of the Philippines, which is tropical, subjected to violent monsoons, seasons of drenching rains, and an almost intolerable heat lasting from March to July, has made it necessary to change continually the Spanish administrators. By 1571, the country had control over the islands, except for any Islamic areas. à à à à à The Filipinos lived in settlements called barangays before the colonization of the Philippines by the Spaniards. As the unit of government, a barangay consisted from 30 to 100 families. It was headed by a datu and was independent from the other groups. Usually, several barangays settled near each other to help one another in case of war or any emergency. The position of datu was passed on by the holder of the position to the eldest son or, if none, the eldest daughter. However, later, any member of the barangay could be chieftain, based on his talent and ability. He had the usual responsibilities of leading and protecting the members of his barangay. In turn, they had to pay tribute to the datu, help him till the land, and help him fight for the barangay in case of war. There were four classes of society.

Lord of the Flies Coursework
ââ¬ËThe main characters in the Lord of the flies are similar to world leaders that have ruled through historyââ¬â¢. I agree that the main characters from Lord of the flies are similar to the world leaders that have ruled through history. There are four main characters in the film ââ¬ËLord of the Fliesââ¬â¢ and they are Jack, Simon, Piggy and Ralph. All these characters have an individual point of view and they all have different personalities. Jack is very comparable to the world leader called Adolf Hitler. Adolf Hitler was absolute evil, all-powerful, mad, and hated by others, bright, deeply religious and stubborn.Adolf Hitler was a leader because he was able to convince people and make them do what he wants them to do. Jack wanted to be a leader as well and after the votes when he wasnââ¬â¢t picked to guide the kids he persuaded Ralph that he would help him out. Jack thought he was all-powerful because everyone followed what he said. Half way through the movie Jack w as getting unwanted because people found him too bossy so he used heââ¬â¢s skills to convince people that he is the best leader and that he is much better than the leader that they picked which was Ralph.I think Jack wasnââ¬â¢t so bright but he knew how to convince people to believe him and this made him very stubborn and tough. He was very sure of him self and he was a very confident person. When the kids joined his group because they had a choice of joining Jack or Ralph they picked Jack and he turned really aggressive and killed two members of the opposite group. Jack took his anger on animals and other members from the plane crash. Piggy reminds me of Martin Luther King as he wanted to change the whole of America to make peace. Piggy wanted to change the people that argued and he was very supportive towards the leader Ralph.When Jack was a very leader Ralph wasnââ¬â¢t sure what to do to stop him and Piggy helped him and seemed to be very supportive and friendly. He was also very gullible and he thought he could trust Ralph by telling him a secret that people used to call him ââ¬ËPiggyââ¬â¢ and he never liked him. He asked Ralph not to tell anyone but Ralph told everyone about it. Piggy carried on being very nice towards Ralph. The main reasons for the abolition of the slave trade The trading and exportation of slaves has been a large part if Britainââ¬â¢s history since the early 15th century and the British Empire had been partly founded on the basis of exchanging slaves for goods and foreign products. 400 years after the slave trade began and people were finally realising how morally wrong the exchanging of humans actually was and on March 3, 1807, President Thomas Jefferson signed into act a bill approved by Congress the day before ââ¬Å"to prohibit the importation of slaves into any port or place within the jurisdiction of the United States.â⬠Three weeks later, on the 25th, the British House of Lords passed an Act for the Abolition of The Slave Trade. Bradford Smith conducted a survey and from his findings he discovered that miss-hires cost a company as much as twenty-four times the individuals base compensation. It takes more than talent to ensure success. A Manager has to hire the correct skills for the job. An employee may be the best wood cutter in the world but it does little good for a company that cuts diamonds. A company must hire people with the talents and skills it needs for its success. If a person does not have the skills needed then the company must be prepared to separate and hire someone with the needed skills to meet company needs. There are a few steps the hiring manager can do to ensure the correct person is found. Some steps include: 1. Defining job requirements 2. Recruit for needs 3. Interview 4. Evaluate 5. Hire correct candidate When defining the job requirements the hiring manager needs to ensure the job responsibilities and requirements are outline so all potential applicants fully understand what the job entails. A hiring manager should only recruit for needs. If the applicant does not meet the companyââ¬â¢s needs then the applicant does not need to be hired regardless of talent level on non-needed skills. The candidates must be interviewed and evaluated to ensure they have the skills and talents the company needs to fill. Finally they need to hire the correct candidate. The candidate can be the best at baking but if the company sells finance the skills do not match a need. (Harvard Business Review Press (2002)) Most companies do not rely on recruiter and headhunters to meet its hiring needs. Companies have turned to non-traditional methods to attract potential hires. These include 1. Job Fairs 2. Company Websites 3. Internet job sites such as Monster. com, CareerSite. com or CareerBuilders. com Companies use these sources as a way to fill its business needs. People also post resumes on some of the job sites listing their skills and abilities with the hope of landing a job or advancing their careers. Ability to attract talent Business managers know good hiring practices can be a strong foundation for any business. Bad hires can lead to business failure. The business has to be able to get the best talent to apply for its positions. There are several reasons why people change jobs. They can include 1. Salary 2. Benefits 3. Location Company reputation and prestige is also another factor that potential employees consider when looking at one company over another. A company with a successful business record is more likely to attract a more skilled workforce than a company that has a bad reputation. According to Bradford Smithââ¬â¢s survey job satisfaction and promotional opportunities are two reasons people leave their jobs. Communication with its employees is an often overlooked aspect within a companyââ¬â¢s structure. Employees can feel alienated by management when decisions are being made without employee impute. An easy way to eliminate this is to keep communications open with all employees. Meetings and suggestion boxes are a great way to keep communication lines open. Open communication is a great way to find out if employees are finding the satisfaction they desire within the job they are working. Employees also want the opportunity for career advancement. Businesses that tend to bottle neck its management positions have no choice but to lose good employees as they look elsewhere for the chance to further their careers. Sometimes employees have to be developed from within the company itself. Specialized training is one way a company develops its own talent. Once a Company figures out what it needs it can develop a training program to ensure it always has enough trained employees to ensure its long term success. This is especially true in manufacturing companies. A successful company will also include promotional opportunities in its development chain. As employees grow they will feel the need to promote. Promotion will help employees develop a sense of ownership and pride. A company that is able to develop its own workforce will be rewarded with a strong business. Marriage is a bond many people search for their whole life until it is found. The official definition of marriage is, The formal union of a man and a woman, typically recognized by law, by which they become husband and wife (Oxford Dictionaries). This definition excludes the men and women who are not attracted to the opposite sex. So what about them, should they just not have the same rights as everyone else because they are slightly different from the common person? I say we rephrase this definition to: The formal union between two individuals, recognized by law, by which they become eternally bonded. I have seen first hand the pain and devastation the law against gay marriage can cause. We need to legalize gay marriage. This is America, where we claim to have natural born rights, one of those rights being the pursuit of happiness. Everyone deserves to be accepted and happy. If marrying someone of the same sex brings you happiness who is to say that you cant do that? We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. This is a quote from our constitution, stating that no matter what, everyone is equal, and we all have equal rights. One right Id like to point out is the pursuit of happiness. Every individual in the United States has this right, according to our nations constitution. If this is so, then may I ask why we discriminate against homosexuals? What is anyones right to say that who they love is wrong? If you are connected to them in such a way that you feel eternally bonded to them, that you couldnt possibly love another person like that ever again, who are we to tell them they can not pursue the happiness they want? The average person would agree that one of the happiest moments in a persons life is their wedding day. Imagine how it would feel to never experience the glamorous day of your wedding. You didnt get to pick out a cake, or get your hair and makeup done professionally. You never get to pick out your wedding dress, or your wedding tux. You would never get that special day all because the law states that gay marriage is illegal, which is pretty much saying its the wrong thing to do. No, you love who you love no matter the sex. This law contradicts our constitution, and needs to be changed. They have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and their sons, and have mingled the holy race with the peoples around them. And the leaders and officials have led the way in this unfaithfulness (Ezra 9:2). This is a quote from the Bible, where it claims mixing races is wrong, and unholy. The bible states biracial marriage and sex is wrong. But we still allow people do to it. So many people claim that the reason they are against gay marriage is because God hates homosexuals, and It says in the Bible that being gay is wrong. First off, God hates no one. He is accepting of all, even those who arent accepting of him. Secondly, in America we have freedom of religion, meaning you can be a part of any religion you wish, and practice anyway you choose. If someone claims to be a Christian, but is also gay, are you going to tell them they cant be part of your religion? Im sorry, but last time I checked you dont make the rules, and you dont speak for God; He will allow anyone to follow Him, whether you like it or not. If we are accepting of biracial marriage, where clearly it states in the Bible to be wrong, then why cant we accept gay marriage as well? I personally dont see why we make such a big deal about gay marriage, just have it legalized. If you arent homosexual then what does it matter to you? It doesnt matter if gay marriage is legal or not, gays will still be together, they will still hold hands, kiss, do whatever they want, because they want to. The only thing that isnt there is a certificate saying they are legally married, give them what they desire. Instead of having debates over gay marriage we can have debates over more important issues. I have yet to understand why in twenty-five states you are allowed to marry your first cousin, Kentucky being one of them, but gay marriage is only allowed in nine states. Somethings not right there. Ive made it clear that people will argue against me, especially over the religious aspect, but we cant live by everything the Bible says. Heres another quote from the Bible, ââ¬Å"Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven (Luke 6:37). Judging is wrong, and because so many people love to throw the Bible at my face over this topic, how about you practice what you preach? No one wants to see any type of couple making out anywhere, man and woman. Female and female, or male and male. No one wants to see it. They will be ridiculed anyway, so I doubt they will want to bring more attention to themselves as it is. Why not legalize gay marriage? Because the Bible says not to? If we listened to every single word in the Bible, life would be very different. The world and the people in it have evolved; we live differently than people did 100s of years ago. The Constitution is the go to source when deciding laws, so why do we still ignore the fine print of, all men are created equal, as well as certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness? Legalizing gay marriage will bring our nation closer, and make our citizens more happy. America is the land of the free but we still have laws against our own citizens that stop them from doing one of the most common forms of pursuing happiness, which is marriage. Do this not only for the homosexuals, do it for people like me, who have to watch members of my family hurt, and be ridiculed for a characteristic they cant change. How would you feel if there was a law against two blonde-haired people getting married? And you fell in love with a blonde-haired person, but legally you couldnt get married, just because someone from YEARS ago said you couldnt? You would want someone to change that for you Im trying my hardest to show why gay marriage really isnt bad, consider everything youve read, and let it sink in.
